At OMG! Decadent Donuts, we’ve always believed that great food doesn’t have to come at the cost of the planet. In fact, some of the best ideas come from looking at things a little differently – and that’s exactly what’s inspired our newest step forward in sustainability: the use of ‘wonky’ fruit in some of our unique, flavour-packed sugar blends.
So, what is wonky fruit?
It’s fruit that might be misshapen, oddly sized, or imperfect on the outside – but perfectly delicious on the inside. Traditionally, much of this fruit never makes it to supermarket shelves, not because of quality or taste, but simply because it doesn’t meet cosmetic standards. The result? Enormous amounts of edible fruit are going to waste.
We think that’s bananas. (And lemons. And oranges. And strawberries.)
By choosing wonky fruit, we’re helping divert perfectly good produce away from landfill and putting it to much better use — dusted generously over hot, fresh donuts. It’s a small change with a big impact, reducing food waste and supporting a more circular food system.
Better for the planet. Better for farmers.
Using wonky fruit doesn’t just benefit the environment – it’s also a win for farmers. When fruit that would otherwise be discarded can be sold and used, it helps reduce waste at the farm gate and creates additional income streams for growers. It’s about valuing the whole harvest, not just the prettiest pieces.
And we don’t stop there.
The fruit we are introducing into our sugars is dried using solar power in a facility on the Sunshine Coast, meaning we’re harnessing renewable energy (literally using sunshine) to prepare our ingredients. Less energy, fewer emissions, and more thoughtful production – all without compromising flavour.
Introducing our first wonky fruit sugar: Luscious Lemon 🍋
The first OMG! sugar blend to roll out using wonky fruit is our aromatic, zesty favourite: Luscious Lemon.
Packed with real lemon flavour and blended with poppy seeds it’s that perfect balance of sweet and tangy, Luscious Lemon delivers everything you love about our donuts – bold taste, natural colour, and a feel-good finish – while quietly doing good behind the scenes.
