Salted caramel, a flavour that has taken the culinary world by storm, combines the rich, buttery notes of caramel with the unexpected yet harmonious addition of sea salt.  This is one of OMG! Decadent Donuts quartets of drizzles designed to enhance the already decadently delicious hot fresh donuts.

The delightful fusion of salt with caramel was popularized in the late 1990s by French pastry chef Pierre Hermé no less, who is often credited with creating the salted butter caramel macaron.

Hermé’s innovation was a revelation, taking the classic sweetness of caramel and elevating it with a touch of salt, which enhanced the overall flavour profile by balancing sweetness with a hint of savoury.

The concept of combining sweet and salty flavours, however, is not new. It dates back to ancient times when people discovered that salt could enhance the taste of sweets. What Hermé did was refine this combination into a sophisticated culinary delight, paving the way for salted caramel to become a beloved flavour in desserts, candies, and beverages worldwide.  Bet he didn’t think of it being drizzled on a hot fresh donut though!
