OMG! Decadent Donuts has licensees located all around Australia, some operating as a side hustle, some as a full time gig. Some are young, some are older, some have children, others do not. Our latest licensee in the spotlight, Mick Mason is based north of Brisbane in the beautiful Moreton Bay region and one of our younger OMG! business owners.
Mick took the plunge
In August 2020, at the ripe old age of 24, Mick decided to take the plunge and become his own boss. He is quite the entrepreneur! Not many 24 year olds own their own business and Mick set up in the patch he lived in — the beautiful Moreton region, south of the Sunshine Coast.
He found out about the business opportunity through social media, and having previously been in the hospitality industry, thought it could be a great opportunity for him as he had experience in that field.
The OMG! business model of operating in low-risk locations such as markets, festivals and events suited the lifestyle Mike wanted to achieve for himself. He also started doing regular ‘pop-ups’ outside local IGA supermarkets to capture the ‘school run’. He, and the IGAs, found that whenever he popped-up, customers would flood in.
Perks of the job
Mick loves seeing his customers return every week for their ‘donut fix’ as they call it. The region is filled with families and bringing a smile to someone’s face really makes his day. ‘Most people my age wouldn’t venture into their own business, but this business was pretty low cost to get into so the risk was also low.
The directors of the business have guided me as have my parents and I’ve learned a lot’ he said.
Thinking about starting your own business?
Mick’s enthusiastic advice to other young adults looking to start their own business was ‘Why be on the bottom of the ladder being bossed around when you can own your own ladder, set your own KPIs and make your own money your way? I’m not saying it’s easy, but the lessons you learn with owning a business like OMG! will set you up for the future.’
‘Owning my own business has really built my confidence. I don’t even want to think about the time before I started with OMG! to be honest with you; but if I’m forced to; I would say it was belittling and was sucking the life out of me. Now I’m strong and positive about the future!’
