A PATH TO HEALTH, WELL-BEING, AND A BETTER ENVIRONMENT

When we first started on the journey to create OMG! Decadent Donuts our goal was to produce a product that was 100% natural, that was better for the environment.  It needed to be as free from as many allergens as possible, and totally free from artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives.  We wanted it to be fun with a fantastic taste and texture that everyone could enjoy, an all-inclusive product!

For an all-natural product, it’s sure took a LOT of science, specifically food science.  But we did it!  We achieved an all-inclusive donut, both tasty and beautiful.

Maintaining taste and being all natural was THE hardest.  We persevered because we know that being additive free and environmentally friendly is the most beneficial choice for our health and well-being.

Drawing upon medical studies from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond, we explored why opting for preservative-free foods is the best option.  This is what we found.

Reduced Risk of Allergic Reactions: A study conducted by researchers at the University of Melbourne highlighted the link between synthetic preservatives, such as sulphites and benzoates, and adverse allergic responses in susceptible individuals. By eliminating these additives from our diet, we can mitigate the risk of allergic symptoms, ranging from mild skin irritation to severe anaphylaxis.

Improved Digestive Health: Research published in the New Zealand Medical Journal suggests that certain artificial additives, may disrupt gut microbiota balance, leading to digestive disturbances and bloating. By opting for preservative-free alternatives, we can promote a healthier gut environment and enhance nutrient absorption, contributing to overall well-being.

Enhanced Cardiovascular Health: Studies conducted in Australia have shed light on the detrimental effects of certain preservatives, such as sodium nitrate and sodium benzoate, on cardiovascular health. These additives, commonly found in processed meats and carbonated beverages, have been associated with elevated blood pressure and impaired vascular function. Choosing preservative-free foods can help reduce our intake of these potentially harmful compounds, thereby supporting heart health and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

 Promotion of Natural Flavours and Nutrients: A study conducted by the University of Auckland demonstrated that fruits and vegetables preserved without synthetic additives maintain their natural colour, taste, and nutritional content more effectively.  Preservative-free foods often boast fresher, more vibrant flavours and retain higher levels of essential nutrients compared to their processed counterparts.  This is certainly the case with the beautiful natural sugars that dust our donuts.  These are made by combinations of natural fruit, vegetables and spices.  They are freeze dried and blended then dusted on the donuts.  By prioritizing fresh, minimally processed foods, we can savour the true essence of natural flavours and reap the nutritional benefits of a wholesome diet.

Environmental Sustainability: Beyond the realm of personal health, choosing preservative-free foods aligns with broader environmental sustainability goals. The production and disposal of synthetic additives contribute to pollution and ecological degradation, posing significant challenges to environmental health. By supporting preservative-free options, we can reduce our environmental footprint and promote more sustainable food production practices, safeguarding natural ecosystems for future generations.

Our decision to ensure OMG! Decadent Donuts were always a preservative-free treat is rooted in a commitment to prioritise health, well-being authenticity, and sustainability. From reducing the risk of allergic reactions and promoting digestive health to supporting cardiovascular function and preserving natural flavours and nutrients, the advantages of opting for preservative-free foods are many.
