The whole team from OMG Decadent Donuts were incredibly honoured to be awarded National Small Business Champion at the national awards in September 2022.
There were more than 3500 entries to these awards, which is the only national recognition program for Australian small business. The program aims to highlight extraordinary people and acknowledge outstanding Australian small businesses.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, “To the winners and nominees, congratulations and thank you. The small businesses you own and operate bring energy and endurance to the Australian economy. In the cities and the bush, our communities thrive because of the services you provide.
Even in the darkest days of the Covid-19 pandemic, you demonstrated the flexibility and creativity that keeps Australia’s economy strong. You adapted and survived – working harder than ever to serve your customers, keep your employees in a job and keep your businesses open. I know I speak for all Australians when I say we admired what you did then and celebrate what you continue to do today.”
Is it any wonder the PM likes small business, as a collective, in 2018/2019 small business contributed more than $418 billion to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) equivalent to over 32% of Australia’s total economy. Australian small business and family enterprises operate as the ‘brain box’ of the nation, and it counts for more than ninety-five percent (95%) of the total number of businesses in the country.
The award category that OMG Decadent Donuts won in these awards was “Champion Fast Food/Takeaway”, one of the biggest categories of all. A further huge honour was that OMG! Founder and Director, David Moore, was also a personal finalist in the Small Business Champion Entrepreneur category.
Each and every one of the OMG! Decadent Donut licensees around Australia are a small businesses in their local community, and they are all truly worthy of the Small Business Champion award. They all give back to the community, 100% of what they earn stays within their community, and they employ people from within their local community.
Goods, services, innovation and job creation are the foundations of a healthy economy. In Australia, we all rely on small businesses’ entrepreneurial strength and character to deliver these precious resources.
Many of the most innovative ideas in Australian business come from small enterprises working hard to change their industries. At OMG!, we think of ourselves as both entrepreneurial and innovators. No, we didn’t invent the donut (it has a long history spanning Millenia), but we were innovative in creating a simple donut able to be enjoyed by almost everyone. Innovative because our soft, fluffy, decadently delicious donuts are free from gluten, dairy, egg, wheat, yeast, nuts and sulphites. And also inclusive because we are respectful to people’s beliefs by also being vegan, Halal and Kosher accredited or certified.
According to the Reserve Bank, small businesses play a hugely significant role in the Australian economy, accounting for almost half of employment in the private non-financial sector and over a third of production. Small businesses sustained our economy in the aftermath of the mining boom and account for almost half of employment in the private non-financial sector, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Overall, about a quarter of Australians work for a small business.
One of the most important signs of the economic force behind Australia’s small business sector is the number of companies falling into this bracket. There are 2.1 million actively trading businesses in the country, with 97 per cent having fewer than 20 employees, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
The Prime Minister said, “You sit at the heart of our economy, delivering high-quality goods and services while providing jobs, skills and opportunities to our young people. Because of you, we can all share in the dream of a better future made in Australia”.
And yes, OMG! Decadent Donuts are all Australian owned and made.
