Q1 Do you personally or your family have any food allergies or intolerance’s ?
Yes I’m coeliac but fortunately I’m the only one in the family.
Pre-diagnosis I was often sick with a variety of symptoms. I used to think people doing the gluten free thing were gullible and on some fad diet. Ignorance is bliss lol. Its only now that I understand how much the little things like a simple donut can make someones day.
The lack of understanding around Coeliac Disease is overwhelming. I don’t eat out often simply because I have to interrogate the wait staff and constantly double check. Just because something doesn’t have gluten in it doesn’t mean it won’t send me to hospital – how it is prepared is critical. The majority of the population don’t realize that an invisible amount of residue left in a fryer can make us sick.
Gluten free means the product is gluten free AND the environment is gluten free AND the equipment is gluten free AND the utensils are…. yep you guessed it – gluten free
Q2 What drew you to establishing an OMG Decadent Donut License in WA?
I figured that with my own CD and also being a member of the Gluten free eating Perth Facebook group and all the trouble other people have finding food to eat whilst out, then other people might face the same challenges. The number of people with food allergies, food intolerance’s or preferences is vast and growing so it just made sense. The business model for OMG was sound and the people who started it up ( who also have a problem with various food allergies) have been great to deal with. And most importantly who doesn’t love donuts ?
Q3 Where do you hope to take the business?
I’m looking forward to starting up in a number of the major markets both north and south of the river and also looking at some of the major music festivals, fetes and expos. I also want to get some other people involved so we can all service our community. Just because we have an autoimmune disease shouldn’t stop us from enjoying all aspects of life like everyone else
Q4 Is there anything else you would like to say ?
What makes my day is watching people’s expressions as they bite into one of our decadent donuts, it’s a look of pure joy and is something we never tire of. You have no idea of the number of times someone has returned to say “I haven’t had a donut in 20 years and I’m in heaven” It doesn’t get old.
One of my favorite stories is one day a petite and very pregnant lady came to my van and ordered several dozen. While cooking them she told me her husband had driven her over an hour to get there and she was coeliac, (obviously) pregnant and craving donuts. She sent me a message later that afternoon to say the first 4 donuts didn’t make it out of the carpark
When most people think of a vegan and gluten/egg/dairy/nut free bakery product, they tend to think – dry, heavy, cardboard and bland, but through trial and error and working closely with food technicians, we have perfected a truly light, fluffy and devilishly moreish donut that has everyone coming back for more.
Our donuts are so unique that Vegan Australia, Coeliac Australia and more recently Kosher Australia and Halal Australia have accredited our company, setting a benchmark for continued quality and excellence.
